Paying your way through school can be tough, especially as an international student. Besides tuition fees, you have to worry about accommodation, feeding, transport, study materials and lots more. Usually, people look to their parents or guardians to pay them through school but not everybody might have access to this opportunity. Since everybody deserves a shot at fair education, scholarships have been put in place by Colleges, not profit making organizations and professional bodies.

Scholarships are awards of financial aid for students to further their education, and are usually awarded based upon specific criteria. Some are awarded based on historical academic performances, some are based on circumstance (e.g. disabled persons scholarships) and some are simply awarded based on region, province or state. All of which are to reflect the values and purposes of the initiator or founder of the award. In this same realm, there are various scholarships that are available for ladies or women.

Scholarships for women are available at all degree levels. From undergraduate, to graduate, master’s, PhD and others. As a result of some of the limitations experienced by some women across the world in furthering their education, most of these scholarships were put in place. Also, for those who intend to pursue their degrees across border, there are various international scholarships for women. The purpose is to provide financial aid to these women and so many have been set up. Here is a list of the top international scholarships for women and how you too can be a part of it.

The Schlumberger Foundation is an independent non-profit entity that supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and women in these fields may apply for this yearly scholarship. The scholarship was launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, now has over 257 women from 62 countries, and grows steadily each year.  The target is for international women who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences and related disciplines at top universities for their disciplines abroad.

They select based on the following criteria: historic academic performance, quality of references, quality of your home university, level of commitment to return to home country, commitment to teaching, relevance of the research to home country, and your commitment to inspiring young women into the sciences. In terms of eligibility, candidates should be from developing countries and Emerging Economies. Also, you have to, of course, be a woman, and have applied to, have been admitted to, or are currently enrolled in a university abroad. Application starts September and ends November annually. They provide one of the best scholarships for women.

AAUW International awards full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. They offer both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited American institutions. For many years, AAUW has provided numerous scholarships for women all over the world. They are providing more than $3.7 million in funding for more than 230 fellowships and grants to outstanding women and non-profit organizations in this academic year alone.

Some of the eligibility criteria includes:

  • having a citizenship in a country other than the United States or possessing a non-immigrant visa if residing in the United States
  • holding an academic degree (earned in the United States or abroad) equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree prior to your application
  • being proficient in English

You can check online for other criteria and the application process. Women pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication are generally eligible. It usually opens up on the first of August and ends mid-November. So far, they have awarded scholarships to more than 3,400 women from more than 140 nations. Definitely one of the best scholarships for women.

The FINCAD Women in Finance Scholarship is an award of US$10,000 to support graduate-level studies and is aimed at supporting outstanding women in the field of finance. It is particularly relating to the use of derivatives in capital markets as well as financial risk management. The scholarship is open to women of any age and from any country, who are studying Finance in a graduate-level program. FINCAD basically seeks to include more women in the capital market.

Luckily, the application is still ongoing. Documents required for application are: Two signed letters of recommendation, an up to date resume, an official transcript from each University you have attended and relevant research papers.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization for women. It was founded on January 21, 1869, by seven students at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Almost 99,000 women have benefited from their educational grants, loans, awards, special projects and stewardship of the renowned Cottey College.

They have awarded educational Loan Fund dollars of more than $172 million, International Peace Scholarships of more than $34 million, Program for Continuing Education grants of more than $49 million, Scholar Awards of more than $21 million and P.E.O. STAR Scholarships of over $5 million. In addition, 8,875 women have graduated from Cottey College!

They provide international scholarships for women from outside of the US and Canada who want to pursue graduate-level studies in any one of those two countries. An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college to qualify for it. Eligibility forms will not be accepted before September 15 or after December 15.

  • Campbell Fellowship in Social Sciences for Women from Developing Countries

Vera R. Campbell Foundation offers one six- or nine-month residential fellowship and women scholars from any nation are eligible to apply. Fellows receive a $4,500/month stipend in addition to housing and office space on the campus. The scholarship can also be taken in the United States. All applicants for this should have, by the application deadline, completed a doctorate in economics, geography, history, law, political science, psychology, sociology, or in an interdisciplinary field that incorporates two or more of these disciplines.

The application deadline is November 1 and applicants would be required to write an essay.
