It is interesting to know that there are many scholarships available today. So many organizations and businesses have sought to contribute their own quota to citizens of their countries and to the world in general. As far as efficient social responsibility is concerned, so many of these companies and scholarship providers rank high with the number of lives they have touched. One of these outstanding companies is Walmart. Walmart Stores Inc., popularly known as Walmart, is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets, discount department stores and grocery stores across the world. According to the Fortune Global 500 list of 2016, Walmart is the world’s largest company by revenue; it is also the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees.

Walmart Scholarship

Being a family-owned business, controlled by the Walton family, Walmart has extended its hospitality by expanding the Walmart family beyond the shores it was incepted in. This they do through the Walmart scholarship. Founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on October 31, 1969, and quoted on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972; Walmart has redefined growth on every level. With the level of social responsibility they offer, it is of little wonder why. The Walmart scholarship is available to Walmart associates and their dependents. However, they also provide opportunities for aspiring students by supporting organizations such as the American Indian College Fund, Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Thurgood Marshall College Fund and a few others.

The Walmart Foundation offers various kinds of scholarships. They include:

The Sam Walton Community Scholarship:

The Sam Watson scholarship comes directly through the Sam Walton Community Scholarship program or other Walmart scholarship foundations. They are usually directed to high school seniors, those going back to school, and employees of Walmart, and Sam’s Club and their children. The Sam Walton community scholarship for college was, however, discontinued in 2011.

Walmart Scholarship for high school leavers:

This is also known as the Higher Reach Scholarship. Higher Reach scholarships help associates who have already graduated to begin, continue or complete their higher education.

Walmart Dependent Scholarship:

This is offered through Walmart Family Foundation. The dependent scholarships is aimed at providing quality education to high school seniors dependent on them from across the world.

Walmart Associate Scholarship:

The Associate Scholarship program provides assistance to graduating high school seniors who are currently employed at Wal-Mart.

Walmart Scholarship for high school seniors:

The Walmart scholarship for high school seniors is for Hispanic students. It is targeted to those in specific geographic regions in the United States and those who are enrolling in college as full time freshman students. This $3,000 Sam Walton scholarship is for Walmart and Sam’s Club associates who are going back to school after having been out of high school for at least one year. The amount awarded is usually $2,500 and it is non-renewable.

Walmart Achievers Scholarships:

The Walmart Achievers scholarship is for Hispanic students in selected majors. This scholarship is done in partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU). The eligibility for this scholarship are to full-time undergraduate Hispanic students that are majoring in Business Administration, General Management, Retail Management, Food Merchandising, or related courses. The amount given is usually $1000 and is also non-renewable

However, the popular ones are the Walmart dependent scholarships and the Walmart associate scholarships. Here are some of the things you need to know about the Walmart dependent and associate scholarships that would enable easy entry.

Walmart Dependent Scholarship

The Walmart Dependent Scholarship is available to dependents of Walmart employees. In other words, this scholarship program is directed to Walmart associates and their high school senior dependents. So if you are a Walmart employee who has worked full-time or part-time with the company for at least 6 months before the application deadline, any dependent of your choice qualifies for it.

Even if you are not an employee of Walmart, but you have a close relation or family member that does, you still qualify as a dependent. Note that dependents of Board of Directors or officers are not eligible to apply. The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years of continuous, full-time enrolment. It is a $13,000 scholarship paid out over four years. Awards are given out, $1,625 at a time. The number of awards offered varies annually. Scholarships are awarded to 25 percent of the eligible applicants according to IRS regulation.

Asides the above criteria, there are a few eligibility criteria for the applicants. They include:

  • A cumulative high school grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4-point scale
  • Must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States
  • Must have a minimum ACT score of 22 or a minimum SAT score of 1030 (Combined Math plus Critical Reading)
  • Must plan to enrol as a freshman at a two-year or four-year college or university that is located in the United States and is accredited and listed on the official website of the United States department of Education. Military academies are not approved institutions
  • Must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents
  • Must be a high school or home school graduating senior, or earning a GED

You would also require certain documents. They include:

  • Current United States federal income tax return from the individual who claimed you as a dependent
  • Current federal Student Aid Report (SAR)
  • Transcript
  • Proof of financial need
  • SAT/ACT scores and financial data

Walmart Associate scholarship

The Walmart Associate scholarship is directly beneficial for Walmart employees. The Walmart Associate Scholarship is available to Walmart and Sam’s Club associates who are based in the United States in order to aid in their educational advancement. Awards are also based on demonstrated financial need and community involvement. The amount awarded for this varies.

The Walmart Associate Scholarship is renewable for up to 6 years (a maximum of 12 payments); up to a maximum award of $16,000 or up to the attainment of the degree for which the scholarship was awarded, whichever comes first. This scholarship is, however, very competitive as only about 10% of eligible applicants make it.

The criteria for this Walmart scholarship include:

  • Must be a Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States
  • Must be employed part-time or full-time with any division of Walmart for at least six consecutive months prior to the appropriate application due date
  • Must have graduated high school/home school or obtained a GED before applying
  • Must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED, or be a graduating high school senior who is planning to enrol in college after graduation
  • If you are applying for the scholarship as a high school senior, you must wait to apply until you’re within 6 months of starting college classes

There are also certain things to have:

  • An electronic copy of your most recent family income tax return. If you claimed yourself, you’ll need a copy of your most recent tax return
  • Your family adjusted gross income
  • Your Expected Family Contribution, or EFC
  • A comprehensive list of volunteer or service activities you’ve participated in within the last 4 years
  • Name and contact information for your high school
  • Name of the college or vocational school you’re planning on attending
  • Your Walmart facility
